Plus, the US coffee industry is booming, and bamboo-based reusable coffee cups might not be as eco-friendly as advertised.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u2018Americans Under 35 Are Reviving Cafes With Their Iced Coffee Obsession\u2019 &#8211; via&nbsp;<\/strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-10-20\/americans-under-35-are-reviving-cafes-with-their-iced-coffee-obsession\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><em>Bloomberg<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The younger you are, the colder you probably like your coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s according to a report from&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.worldcoffeeportal.com\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Allegra World Coffee Portal<\/a>, which showed that eight out of ten coffee drinkers under the age of 35 bought an iced coffee drink at least once a week. The survey also found that almost a quarter of cafe customers drink iced coffee every day, something that the&nbsp;<em>Bloomberg&nbsp;<\/em>article credits with \u201chelping US coffee shops bounce back from a Covid hit, and the industry is now topping pre-pandemic levels.\u201d (More on that later.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Half of \u201cindustry leaders\u201d consider iced coffee the most important current market trend, according to Allegra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The survey&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/08\/02\/business\/starbucks-quarterly-earnings.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">builds on<\/a>&nbsp;several years&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.worldcoffeeportal.com\/Latest\/News\/2021\/August\/Starbucks-says-nearly-three-quarters-of-US-beverag\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">of reports<\/a>&nbsp;that Starbucks, the biggest coffee chain in the US&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/2023\/10\/24\/led-by-big-chains-us-coffee-shop-market-surpasses-40000-stores\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">with more than<\/a>&nbsp;16,000 stores, is&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2023\/08\/07\/business\/cold-drinks-coffee-tea-starbucks\/index.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">increasingly reliant<\/a>&nbsp;on iced drinks. Cold coffee beverages now account for 75% of the brand\u2019s sales, while&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/coffee-chains-see-sales-cold-drinks-surge-thanks-gen-z-2023-8?r=US&amp;IR=T\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">up north in Canada<\/a>, iced coffee makes up 40% of Tim Hortons sales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mintel.com\/food-and-drink-market-news\/coffee-enters-its-fourth-wave-what-it-means-for-retail-and-foodservice-coffee-brands\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Recent analysis<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/08\/02\/business\/starbucks-quarterly-earnings.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">news articles<\/a>&nbsp;point&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2021\/04\/24\/hot-coffee-is-cancelled-why-gen-z-love-iced-coffee-14464735\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">to Gen Z<\/a>&nbsp;(<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.beresfordresearch.com\/age-range-by-generation\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">currently 26 and under<\/a>) as&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/brands-battle-for-picky-gen-z-s-billions-zk9ll5rk0\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the main driver<\/a>&nbsp;of this trend.&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/coffee-makers-look-to-conquer-the-supermarket-aisle-1510495200\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Previously<\/a>, it was millennials (27-42)&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.comunicaffe.com\/millennials-drive-growth-of-fourth-wave-iced-coffee-but-where-do-we-go-from-here\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">who were considered<\/a>&nbsp;the iced coffee-focused generation. Finance<\/em>\u00a0here<\/a>.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u2018NCA Economic Impact Report: US Consumers Spend $301 Million Per Day on Coffee\u2019 &#8211; via&nbsp;<\/strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/2023\/10\/23\/nca-economic-impact-report-us-consumers-spend-301-million-per-day-on-coffee\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><em>Daily Coffee News<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Coffee makes up 1.3% of the entire US economy, according to&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncausa.org\/Research-Trends\/Economic-Impact\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a new economic impact report<\/a>&nbsp;from the&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncausa.org\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Coffee Association<\/a>&nbsp;(NCA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consumers spent nearly $110 billion on coffee and related goods in 2022, the report found, or about $301 million each day\u2014mostly on iced coffee. The total economic impact of the US coffee industry was $343.2 billion, up 52.4% from the last time the report was commissioned in 2015.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Market research firm&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.technomic.com\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Technomic<\/a>&nbsp;compiled the report, which reflects \u201call economic activity in the US coffee economy,\u201d according to the NCA, \u201cthe majority of which is created in the food service sector.\u201d Other elements of the coffee industry measured in the report include the economic impact of importers, transportation, sweeteners and flavorings manufacturers, maintenance, and accounting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking of those working in the coffee economy, the report found that the industry is responsible for more than 2.2 million US jobs and generates over $100 billion in wages. While&nbsp;<em>Daily Coffee News<\/em>&nbsp;notes that this comes out to an average of $46,000 per year, that number doesn\u2019t necessarily address the wage disparity between hourly workers&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.salary.com\/research\/salary\/benchmark\/barista-salary\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">like baristas<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/starbucks-ceo-salary-laxman-narasimhan-pay-signing-bonus-equity-2023-3?r=US&amp;IR=T\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">top executives<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis landmark study confirms the great news that coffee not only fuels our daily lives, it is a powerful engine for jobs, communities, and the U.S. economy,\u201d said NCA President and CEO William \u201cBill\u201d Murray (no, not&nbsp;<em>that<\/em>&nbsp;Bill Murray)&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncausa.org\/Newsroom\/Coffee-brews-big-benefits-for-US-economy-landmark-report\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in a press release<\/a>, \u201call while supporting coffee farmers\u2019 livelihoods in Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The positive message from the NCA stands in stark contrast to two recent reports that warned of income and funding inequalities within the wider coffee industry. A recent&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/freshcup.com\/coffee-news-club-week-of-july-3rd\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">white paper<\/a>&nbsp;from&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/worldcoffeeresearch.org\/resources\/coffees-innovation-crisis\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">World Coffee Research<\/a>&nbsp;warned of an \u201cinnovation crisis\u201d in coffee and a funding gap of $452 million a year over the next decade to protect the diversity and quality of green coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, the authors of the&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/coffeebarometer.org\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2023 Coffee Barometer<\/a>&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/freshcup.com\/coffee-news-club-week-of-september-18th\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote that<\/a>&nbsp;\u201cit is crucial to recognize the interconnectedness between globalization of production, natural resource depletion, and the exploitation of marginalized and impoverished communities. via\u00a0<em>Sprudge<\/em><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Week in Coffee Unionizing<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Portland, Maine-based Coffee By Design&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pressherald.com\/2023\/10\/25\/portlands-coffee-by-design-voluntarily-joins-union\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">has voluntarily recognized<\/a>&nbsp;its workers\u2019&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/freshcup.com\/coffee-news-club-week-of-october-23rd\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">union bid<\/a>&nbsp;and says negotiations over a contract for the company\u2019s 20 baristas will begin soon. \u201cWe have always said a great cup of coffee changes lives, and viewed our coffee, and our business, as a catalyst for positive change and solidarity,\u201d said owner Mary Allen Lindemann in a statement. \u201cIt is in keeping with this philosophy and our long-demonstrated commitment to our employees that we will work with the Laborers\u2019 Union in support of our retail baristas.\u201d Negotiations will be conducted \u201cdeliberately, rather than quickly,\u201d according to a Local 327 spokesperson, who thanked Lindemann while noting that \u201cthis is the way it\u2019s supposed to work.\u201d The contract will not apply to the company\u2019s roastery but will cover workers at all three retail locations in Portland.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A National Labor Relations Board administrative law judge\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/starbucks-abortion-travel-benefit-union-workers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ruled that<\/a>\u00a0local Starbucks supervisors illegally retaliated against organizing workers by threatening to deny them access to abortion travel benefits. \u201cA month after the U.S. Supreme Court voided the constitutional right to abortion in 2022,\u201d\u00a0<em>CBS News<\/em>\u00a0reports, \u201cStarbucks told workers trying to unionize in Wisconsin that they risked losing coverage of travel costs for the procedure.\u201d The company\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrdive.com\/news\/starbucks-threatened-to-cut-abortion-travel-reimbursement\/697018\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said it is<\/a>\u00a0reviewing the decision and \u201cevaluating potential next steps.\u201d<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Is Coffee Good For You?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It depends on what you\u2019re drinking it from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Charities and retailers in the United Kingdom&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2023\/oct\/21\/warnings-over-eco-coffee-cups-that-pose-risks-to-health-with-toxic-resin\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">are selling reusable cups<\/a>&nbsp;made from bamboo, a material that\u2019s often marketed as \u201ceco-friendly.\u201d However, many of these cups contain a plastic resin, which could potentially leach dangerous substances and make the cups difficult to recycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An article from&nbsp;<em>The Observer, The Guardian\u2019s&nbsp;<\/em>sister Sunday newspaper<em>,&nbsp;<\/em>found that products made from bamboo with a melamine formaldehyde resin were being sold by the charities WWF-UK and the Wild Planet Trust, despite concerns from regulators that they \u201cmay allow the accelerated degradation of plastic that can contaminate the food or drink and may be a risk to health.\u201d Both charities removed the cups from sale after being contacted by the newspaper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2019, the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bfr.bund.de\/en\/press_information\/2019\/47\/do_not_use__bamboo_ware__tableware_for_hot_drinks_and_meals-243929.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">conducted tests<\/a>&nbsp;on \u201cbambooware\u201d products and found that, when filled with hot liquids like coffee or tea, they could release melamine and formaldehyde.
