Plus Keurig Dr Pepper invests in La Colombe, and 93% of Kenyan coffee farmers report feeling the effects of the climate crisis.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>&#8216;Keurig Dr Pepper Buys Into La Colombe with $300 Million&#8217; &#8211; via&nbsp;<\/strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/2023\/07\/20\/keurig-dr-pepper-buys-into-la-colombe-with-300-million\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><em>Daily Coffee News<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The beverage conglomerate Keurig Dr Pepper (KDP) has paid $300 million for a 33% stake in La Colombe Coffee Roasters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the cash investment, the deal includes &#8220;a strategic partnership&#8221; and a long-term distribution agreement. As part of the deal, KDP will sell La Colombe&#8217;s shelf-stable ready-to-drink (RTD) coffees through its store network and manufacture and distribute a line of La Colombe-branded K-Cup coffee pods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Philadelphia-based La Colombe was once&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.villagevoice.com\/2017\/05\/17\/stay-woke\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">at the forefront<\/a>&nbsp;of the specialty coffee movement alongside Blue Bottle, Stumptown, and Intelligentsia, all of which have been swallowed up by larger companies (Blue Bottle by&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2017\/sep\/16\/blue-bottle-coffee-nestle\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nestl\u00e9<\/a>&nbsp;and Stumptown and Intelligentsia by&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eater.com\/2015\/11\/5\/9666754\/intelligentsia-stumptown-peets-coffee\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Peet&#8217;s\/JAB Holding<\/a>). La Colombe pursued a bold expansion strategy in the 2010s fueled by&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/2014\/09\/09\/breaking-la-colombe-secures-28-5-million-investment-plans-coastal-expansion\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">private equity investment<\/a>, opening more retail locations&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.phillyvoice.com\/la-colombe-headed-boston-launching-canned-draft-latte\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">and moving<\/a>&nbsp;aggressively into the nascent RTD coffee market. La Colombe is also embroiled in its union saga, with&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/freshcup.com\/coffee-news-club-week-of-january-31st\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">workers at several<\/a>&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/freshcup.com\/coffee-news-club-week-of-december-19th\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chicago<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/freshcup.com\/coffee-news-club-week-of-november-28th\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Washington, DC<\/a>&nbsp;stores voting to unionize over the past year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>KDP&#8217;s&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/keurig-dr-pepper-and-la-colombe-announce-strategic-partnership-301882078.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">press release<\/a>&nbsp;describes La Colombe as &#8220;an independent, high-growth, super premium coffee company,&#8221; and the company&#8217;s larger-than-life co-founder Todd Carmichael (of coffee travel TV show &#8216;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt2365811\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dangerous Grounds&#8217;<\/a>&nbsp;fame) has long defended that independence. The irony is not lost on&nbsp;<em>Daily Coffee News<\/em>, which notes that Carmichael wrote an article&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.esquire.com\/food-drink\/drinks\/a10027\/stumptown-sold-out-5839692\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">for&nbsp;<em>Esquire&nbsp;<\/em>in 2011<\/a>&nbsp;bemoaning corporate investment&#8217;s increasing influence in specialty coffee by referencing recent private equity&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/archive.nytimes.com\/dinersjournal.blogs.nytimes.com\/2011\/06\/02\/stumptown-expands-with-the-help-of-a-powerful-investor\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">investment in Stumptown<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;What advice can I give to anyone who&#8217;s mourning this loss? Vote with your dollar and avoid Wall Street-owned roasters,&#8221; Carmichael wrote. &#8220;Hopefully then they will leave our roasters alone. While the effects of the heatwave have been devastating and immediate, Kenyan coffee farmers are sounding the alarm about the long-term impact of rising temperatures.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a survey conducted by the&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fairtrade.org.uk\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fairtrade Foundation<\/a>, 93% of coffee producers in Kenya said they were already experiencing the impacts of climate change, &#8220;including more erratic rainfall and an increase in pests and diseases.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These insights come from a&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fairtrade.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/36_FAIRTRADE_FairVoice-climate-study_2023_FINAL.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">study by the Fairtrade Foundation and Fairtrade Africa<\/a>. The study utilized a mobile phone reporting project,&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fairtrade.org.uk\/what-is-fairtrade\/the-impact-of-our-work\/fairvoice\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">FairVoice<\/a>, where producers could give testimonials about their experiences working on farms in real time. &#8220;Using their mobile phones,&#8221;&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fairtrade.org.uk\/what-is-fairtrade\/the-impact-of-our-work\/fairvoice\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fairtrade International reports<\/a>, &#8220;farmers and workers can share insights and respond to questions, which are received directly by the platform.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fairtrade International formally announced the findings of the study&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fairtrade.org.uk\/media-centre\/news\/fairtrade-coffee-farmers-in-kenya-taking-action-to-prepare-for-climate-change-despite-the-harmful-impact-a-new-study-shows\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">on Wednesday<\/a>&nbsp;and noted the financial implications of the climate crisis for farmers. &#8220;As well as losing income from damaged coffee beans through diseases or pests such as thrips and coffee berry disease,&#8221; the announcement said, &#8220;it costs farmers extra money to invest in planting new varieties of coffee plants, manage infestations or grow alternative crops to generate extra income.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fairtrade International provides training to farmers that includes climate resilience techniques\u2014 90% of survey respondents reported they use these strategies. &#8220;Me and my community are trying to preserve water sources, planting trees and preventing soil erosion,&#8221; said John Gachenga, a coffee farmer and FairVoice Community Researcher. &#8220;We make decisions through discussion and community meetings.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In April, Fairtrade International&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/freshcup.com\/coffee-news-club-week-of-april-3rd\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced they would increase<\/a>&nbsp;their green coffee price minimums. Workers at the Starbucks Reserve Roastery in Chicago, one of three reserve roasteries in the US,&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SBWorkersUnited\/status\/1679936704512180229\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced their intent<\/a>&nbsp;to join Starbucks Workers United. If successful, the union would represent over 200 employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Covering 35,000 square feet over five floors,&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sprudge.com\/the-worlds-largest-starbucks-is-voting-to-unionize-212046.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Sprudge&nbsp;<\/em>calls<\/a>&nbsp;the Chicago roastery &#8220;the jewel in the Starbucks crown&#8221; and &#8220;the Davos of the demitasse.&#8221; According to&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/business\/ct-biz-starbucks-roastery-union-filing-20230714-fzpkogmsffadne75ntfhiuldzq-story.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the&nbsp;<em>Chicago Tribune<\/em><\/a>, the potential bargaining unit includes &#8220;about 230 baristas and mixologists\u2026bakers\u2026and operations leads who work in retail and customer service&#8221; but not roasters as they are not retail employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We are tired of seeing our coworkers burnt out, bullied, and mistreated everyday,&#8221;&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/chicago.suntimes.com\/business\/2023\/7\/14\/23795624\/workers-starbucks-michigan-avenue-roastery-union-vote\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said operations lead Jamie Williamson<\/a>. &#8220;I love my job, I love my coworkers, and I love the people we serve. I know we all deserve to experience the Roastery the way it should be \u2014 as a space where everyone feels welcome, appreciated, and valued.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Workers cite a desire for higher wages and concerns over overcrowding and safety at the tourist-driven store as reasons for unionizing. &#8220;It&#8217;s not safe for the workers, it&#8217;s not safe for the space. But the management only cares about the money,&#8221; said Kyra Supnet of the overcrowding issue. Workers say they were also expected to continue working during&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2023\/jul\/12\/chicago-tornadoes-storms-airport-traffic-ohare-midway\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent tornado<\/a>&nbsp;warnings in Chicago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Starbucks says it remains &#8220;committed to supporting our Chicago Roastery partners. Our partners and their safety are core to our operation.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to reporting from the&nbsp;<em>Chicago Sun-Times<\/em>, a supermajority of workers at the roastery signed union cards<em>.<\/em>&nbsp;A vote could happen within weeks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Week in Corporate Coffeewashing<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>JDE Peet&#8217;s is now offering its instant coffee packaged in paper. In a&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ml-eu.globenewswire.com\/Resource\/Download\/71effa00-97ba-4d58-867a-4e017ccbfba5\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">press release about the move to paper<\/a>, the company calls the packaging &#8220;the first of its kind in the coffee market.&#8221;&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sustainabilitymag.com\/articles\/jde-peets-announce-new-sustainable-coffee-packaging\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Sustainability Magazine<\/em>&nbsp;says<\/a>&nbsp;it will reduce the company&#8217;s &#8220;carbon footprint and promot[e] reuse.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The press release states that the new packaging is &#8220;designed to create a more sustainable ecosystem in the soluble coffee market by incentivising the reuse of existing glass jars and tin formats. Moreover, the coffee from this new paper pack will generate the lowest carbon footprint within the existing range of JDE Peet&#8217;s products.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The launch is part of the coffee giant&#8217;s &#8220;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jdepeets.com\/sustainability\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Common Grounds<\/a>&#8221; sustainability initiative, which involves &#8220;championing regenerative agriculture to enhance livelihoods and positively impact our planet,&#8221; &#8220;striving towards a planet-positive supply chain,&#8221; and &#8220;engaging colleagues and communities to support wellbeing and promote equal opportunity.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>JDE Peet&#8217;s, which is &#8220;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jabholco.com\/documents\/6\/CreditOpinion-JDE-Peets-NV-31May22.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">majority indirectly<\/a>&#8221; owned by JAB Holding (the same conglomerate that owns the La Colombe-invested Keurig Dr Pepper),&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.worldcoffeeportal.com\/Latest\/News\/2023\/February\/JDE-Peet-s-posts-strong-2022-sales,-but-price-rise\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">posted sales of<\/a>&nbsp;$8.7 billion and growth of 16 percent in 2022. In 2021, the company&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/app.impaakt.com\/analyses\/in-2021-jde-peets-nvs-total-ghg-emissions-scope123-were-66-mn-tco2e-66861\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">was responsible for<\/a>&nbsp;releasing the equivalent of 6.6 million tons of carbon dioxide, which,&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/freshcup.com\/coffee-news-club-week-of-january-31st\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">as we&#8217;ve noted before<\/a>, is more&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/greenhouse-gas-emissions#greenhouse-gas-emissions-by-country\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">than countries<\/a>&nbsp;like Iceland or Belize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Is Coffee Good For You?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Espresso compounds&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/news\/2023-07-espresso-coffee-alzheimer-tau-protein.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">could inhibit a process<\/a>&nbsp;that is thought to be involved in the onset of Alzheimer&#8217;s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alzheimer&#8217;s belongs to a group of neurodegenerative diseases called&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/28987182\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tauopathies<\/a>&nbsp;which involve the abnormal function of tau proteins. Tau proteins help stabilize nerve cells in the brain, but&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.brightfocus.org\/alzheimers\/article\/tau-protein-and-alzheimers-disease-whats-connection\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">during the development<\/a>&nbsp;of certain conditions, such as Alzheimer&#8217;s, the proteins can accumulate and clump together. Researchers believe that preventing this accumulation could alleviate Alzheimer&#8217;s symptoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Previous studies examining coffee&#8217;s effect on diseases such as Alzheimer&#8217;s have generally been inconclusive: some&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/20182054\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">have found<\/a>&nbsp;that it helps protect against the disease, while others&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/freshcup.com\/coffee-news-club-week-of-june-5th\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">have come to<\/a>&nbsp;the opposite conclusion. This new research, published in the&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/10.1021\/acs.jafc.3c01072\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry<\/em><\/a>, focused on whether coffee compounds could impact the accumulation of tau proteins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the study, scientists from the&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.univr.it\/home\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">University of Verona<\/a>&nbsp;in Italy extracted and freeze-dried espresso shots and investigated how various compounds found in the espresso interacted with tau proteins after incubation.
