Plus, we&#8217;re getting closer to naturally-decaffeinated coffee, and unionized Nestl\u00e9 workers in New Jersey are rallying to keep their factory open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>&#8216;Coffee Research Group Progresses on Naturally Decaffeinated Varieties&#8217; &#8211; via&nbsp;<\/strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/retail-consumer\/coffee-research-group-progresses-naturally-decaffeinated-varieties-2023-06-16\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><em>Reuters<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A two-decade-long coffee project is entering a pivotal stage: researchers in Brazil are beginning regional field trials to test the viability of naturally-decaffeinated coffee varieties.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Researchers at the&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iac.sp.gov.br\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Instituto Agron\u00f4mico de Campinas<\/a>&nbsp;(IAC) have spent years crossbreeding different coffee plants that naturally have a low caffeine content and have now begun planting the hybrid cultivars in various regions around Brazil. &#8220;The results we had so far look promising, we are upbeat,&#8221; said Julio Cesar Mistro, one of the IAC researchers running the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>IAC is one of the oldest agricultural research centers in the world, and in its 135-year history has had&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/2019\/06\/24\/132-years-of-groundbreaking-coffee-research-at-brazils-iac\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a significant impact<\/a>&nbsp;on coffee agronomy\u2014&#8221;approximately 90% of the coffee plants in Brazil, and 70% of coffee plants globally, can be traced back to IAC development,&#8221;&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/2023\/06\/20\/naturally-decaffeinated-coffee-plant-study-enters-decisive-stage-in-brazil\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to<\/a>&nbsp;<em>Daily Coffee News<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Decaffeinated coffee accounts for&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/stir-tea-coffee.com\/features\/modern-decaf\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">about 10%<\/a>&nbsp;of the US coffee market and&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.futuremarketinsights.com\/reports\/decaffeinated-coffee-market\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">is worth around<\/a>&nbsp;$20 billion worldwide. A naturally-decaffeinated plant could theoretically upend this market, although we&#8217;re still several years away from a usable harvest from the field tests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coffee is typically decaffeinated using either water-based processes or chemical solvents, but every process affects the final taste\u2014a naturally-decaffeinated coffee plant would solve this issue. With the global decaf market predicted to grow to&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marketresearchfuture.com\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">upwards of<\/a>&nbsp;$26 billion by 2027 and $39 billion by 2033, and with&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/perfectdailygrind.com\/2017\/05\/millennials-turn-to-decaf-what-does-this-mean-for-cafe-owners\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more young people<\/a>&nbsp;cutting back on their caffeine intake, the future could be bright for a high-quality, natural decaf.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/retail-consumer\/coffee-research-group-progresses-naturally-decaffeinated-varieties-2023-06-16\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Read the full story here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>&#8216;Nestl\u00e9 Workers Rally to Keep 75-year-old Freehold Coffee Plant Open&#8217; via&nbsp;<\/strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/njbiz.com\/nestle-workers-rally-to-keep-75-year-old-freehold-coffee-plant-open\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><em>NJBiz<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Nestl\u00e9 is considering closing its factory in Freehold, New Jersey, and moving production to its new $340 million facility in Mexico\u2014a move that would put 200 employees out of work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Teamsters Local 11, representing the Freehold plant workers, held a demonstration calling on the company to stay and safeguard its members&#8217; jobs. Shuttering the plant, Nestl\u00e9&#8217;s last coffee-producing factory in the United States, would &#8220;deeply impact workers and the local community,&#8221; according to a union representative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nestl\u00e9 says it has yet to reach a final decision, but managers have told employees that the plant &#8220;could close by the end of 2023.&#8221; The company&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/njbiz.com\/nestle-considering-options-for-75-year-old-freehold-plant\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">has previously said<\/a>&nbsp;that &#8220;the factory is limited based on its age, flexibility and ability to meet growing consumer demand in a cost-effective way.&#8221; Representatives from Nestl\u00e9 have sat down with the union to discuss plans and are &#8220;committed to giving our Freehold employees updates in a timely manner.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2022, Nestl\u00e9 made $17 billion in profit and received $14.5 million in taxpayer-funded public subsidies from New Jersey,&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/teamster.org\/2023\/06\/teamsters-rally-to-demand-nestle-keep-coffee-plant-open\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to<\/a>&nbsp;a Teamsters press release. &#8220;This plant is an institution in the Freehold community going back to the 1940s,&#8221; said Local 11 member and Nestl\u00e9 employee Nazar Mykhaylenko. &#8220;It&#8217;s outrageous to think that the work so many generations have done in Freehold could move thousands of miles away to another country\u2014all so Nestl\u00e9 can exploit cheaper labor.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/njbiz.com\/nestle-workers-rally-to-keep-75-year-old-freehold-coffee-plant-open\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Read the full story here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>&#8216;Drink Coffee Like It&#8217;s Your Job As Peet&#8217;s &#8216;Chief Cold Brew Officer&#8217; &#8211; via&nbsp;<\/strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foodandwine.com\/peets-chief-cold-brew-officer-job-7550970\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><em>Food &amp; Wine<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Okay, so this is clearly clickbait-y PR fluff, but we never claimed to be above such things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Peet&#8217;s Coffee wants to &#8220;hire&#8221;&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/assets.ctfassets.net\/69yuuzkbsv57\/7jKL7Xnr6cddFnmwWMGNo5\/173fafdf7223c902843534cab4d67b76\/Peet-s_Coffee_-_Chief_Cold_Brew_Officer_Press_Release_FINAL.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">what they<\/a>&nbsp;call a Chief Cold Brew Officer for the summer, a role &#8220;without any of those actual C-suite requirements like spreadsheets and board meetings&#8221;\u2014or the associated C-suite salary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This person will be in charge of hyping the company&#8217;s iced coffee and can &#8220;indulge in their personal love of Peet&#8217;s cold brew all summer long.&#8221; The job will involve visiting Peet&#8217;s locations and &#8220;inspiring others to join the cold brew revolution&#8221; (although judging by&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/659724\/cold-brew-coffee-sales-us\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cold brew&#8217;s popularity<\/a>, they might have missed the boat with that one), as do social media promotion for the brand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This glorified intern will be paid in what amounts to exposure\u2014you will presumably be featured on Peet&#8217;s social media platforms\u2014plus an &#8220;unlimited&#8221; (but not actually unlimited) supply of Peet&#8217;s cold brew. Let&#8217;s go to the fine print: the winner will be paid in the form of Peetnik Rewards (Peet&#8217;s in-store loyalty program) points, $200 per week for seven weeks, up to a total value of $1400. Can you drink $200 worth of Peet&#8217;s cold brew each week for seven weeks straight?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The winner must also live within 15 miles of a Peet&#8217;s location, which narrows things down to nine states and the District of Columbia. The union announced that workers at the Seattle Roastery will lead the nationwide strike. &#8220;The roastery wants to show solidarity with all workers that have been discriminated against in the company,&#8221; roastery worker Mari Cosgrove&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/06\/23\/starbucks-union-says-workers-will-strike-over-pride-decor.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told&nbsp;<em>CNBC<\/em><\/a>. &#8220;Frankly, it feels like an attack when these flags are taken down.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Starbucks insists that there is no corporate policy banning Pride decorations, but&nbsp;<em>More Perfect Union<\/em>&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/perfectunion.us\/starbucks-banned-pride-revealed-oklahoma\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">obtained emails<\/a>&nbsp;that show management at the regional level decided to cancel future Pride month decorations last year. A store manager in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, wrote in a note to unionized baristas in June 2022 that &#8220;the decision was made last year on a regional level to create consistency from store to store.&#8221; That store is part of what Starbucks calls Area 120, which comprises over 100 stores across Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Missouri.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The National Labor Relations Board&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.seattletimes.com\/business\/starbucks\/starbucks-broke-labor-law-at-shuttered-seattle-store-nlrb-says\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">found Starbucks guilty<\/a>&nbsp;of violating fair labor practices at a now-permanently-closed store in Seattle. The board ruled that the company broke the law by threatening to discipline a worker if they testified at an NLRB hearing without securing shift coverage and by prohibiting union activity during company-paid breaks. Starbucks, not happy with the ruling, is &#8220;exploring opportunities for further legal review.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Coffee and the Climate Crisis<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As the planet heats, weather patterns become less predictable, and diseases and pests proliferate, scientists&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1462901119301777\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">are researching<\/a>&nbsp;how to help&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cabi.org\/Uploads\/CABI\/projects\/Coffee%20and%20climate%20change.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">coffee cope<\/a>. That could mean new, more resilient hybrids or improved farming techniques\u2014or it could mean turning to rediscovered coffee species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, it was excelsa, a recently-reappraised, high-yielding&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/freshcup.com\/can-liberica-change-the-way-we-grow-coffee\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">subvariety of Liberica<\/a>&nbsp;that also boasts disease-resistant features. Now,&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/heat-tolerant-africa-coffee-strain-054950856.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a pilot project<\/a>&nbsp;in Sierra Leone backed by the green coffee giant Sucafina is focusing on&nbsp;<em>Coffea Stenophylla<\/em>, another rediscovered coffee variety that can yield a similar-tasting bean to arabica but at much warmer temperatures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stenophylla was grown commercially in the late 19th century in Sierra Leone and other African countries, primarily for export to France,&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/perfectdailygrind.com\/2020\/12\/what-is-coffea-stenophylla\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">but its use declined<\/a>&nbsp;due to its small bean size and slow development.
