{"id":30967,"date":"2022-06-02T06:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-06-02T11:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/freshcup.com\/?p=30967"},"modified":"2022-08-17T23:36:13","modified_gmt":"2022-08-18T04:36:13","slug":"couplet-coffee-is-doing-coffee-social-media-better","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/freshcup.com\/couplet-coffee-is-doing-coffee-social-media-better\/","title":{"rendered":"Couplet Coffee Is Doing Coffee Social Media Better"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>[W]hen I opened <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/couplet\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/couplet\/\">Couplet Coffee\u2019s Instagram page<\/a> for the first time, I was dazzled by COLOR.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same thing happened on their <a href=\"https:\/\/coupletcoffee.com\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/coupletcoffee.com\/\">website<\/a>. Couplet\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CoupletCoffee\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CoupletCoffee\">Twitter account<\/a> reads like a romp through a Gen Z mind that occasionally drinks coffee. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@drinkcouplet\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@drinkcouplet\">Their TikTok account<\/a> is sort of about coffee\u2014but it\u2019s mainly about Couplet Coffee founder Gefen Skolnick. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"819\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/freshcup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/IMG_3220-2-819x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-30969\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freshcup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/IMG_3220-2-819x1024.jpg 819w, https:\/\/freshcup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/IMG_3220-2-400x500.jpg 400w, https:\/\/freshcup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/IMG_3220-2-768x960.jpg 768w, https:\/\/freshcup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/IMG_3220-2-1080x1350.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/freshcup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/IMG_3220-2-610x763.jpg 610w, https:\/\/freshcup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/IMG_3220-2.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><figcaption>Gefen Skolnick<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Much of the content goes against conventional advice on how companies should handle social media, but as <a href=\"https:\/\/freshcup.com\/be-bold-embracing-maximalism-in-coffee-branding\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/freshcup.com\/be-bold-embracing-maximalism-in-coffee-branding\/\">Couplet\u2019s runaway success<\/a> over the last few months has shown, it\u2019s working.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Great Coffee Should Be Accessible<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When she graduated from college and started Couplet, Skolnick leveraged her existing Twitter community to raise initial funding for the business. It wasn\u2019t part of her plan, but as she mentions in <a href=\"https:\/\/gefen.medium.com\/how-i-raised-angel-investments-for-a-pre-launch-startup-using-just-twitter-as-a-new-grad-8db467131af7\">her account of this process<\/a>, the community she had built around her Twitter presence helped build trust in her. Skolnick\u2019s social media voice is rooted in Gen Z culture but also has intelligent takes on the tech industry, being a founder, and start-up businesses.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She extended that voice into Couplet Coffee\u2019s social media presence, creating a cute, inclusive, and approachable brand. When we sat down to chat about how she arrived at this voice for Couplet, Skolnick was refreshingly vulnerable about it. \u201cI\u2019ve been an outsider to the specialty coffee world for a while,\u201d she started. It took her a \u201csignificant amount of time\u201d to figure out the industry and the major players. From the consumer side, she witnessed a lack of accessibility in specialty coffee\u2014from the jargon present on retail bags to the \u201cbougie\u201d reputation specialty has developed.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"918\" src=\"https:\/\/freshcup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/IMG_3280-1-1024x918.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-30971\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freshcup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/IMG_3280-1-1024x918.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/freshcup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/IMG_3280-1-500x448.jpg 500w, https:\/\/freshcup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/IMG_3280-1-768x689.jpg 768w, https:\/\/freshcup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/IMG_3280-1-1080x968.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/freshcup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/IMG_3280-1-610x547.jpg 610w, https:\/\/freshcup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/IMG_3280-1.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Skolnick steered clear of that for Couplet. The website has phrases like \u201cMake it cute\u201d and \u201cGreat coffee shouldn\u2019t be douchey\u201d displayed prominently. Some of this came out of conversations with friends who didn\u2019t understand her obsession with specialty coffee pre-Couplet; the rest is her own desire to welcome in people who have been traditionally excluded. She compared her approach to other specialty coffee \u201cbehemoths\u201d as different waves, thinking of Couplet as a new wave, signaling a significant change to come.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Fourth Wave in Marketing<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Marketing trends come and go, but Couplet is tapping into a lasting difference in how people interact with companies. Consumers tend to know when they\u2019re being marketed to and when a brand is pandering. Couplet\u2019s social media feels more real, especially to younger consumers, because there\u2019s clearly an actual person tweeting and posting pictures, not a marketing strategy edited to within an inch of its life.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Couplet achieves relatability through the visible presence of the founder\u2014Skolnick is all over the brand\u2019s TikTok, for instance\u2013and how the brand interacts with customers and potential customers. It\u2019s not all about selling. Simple tweets like \u201cgm bb\u201d (good morning, baby) feel like a friend\u2019s text. Retweeting jokes about shitposting, or being intentionally provocative or off-kilter, acknowledges that they\u2019re on top of what they\u2019re doing. Importantly, when they use the brand\u2019s social media to poke fun at things, it\u2019s always at their own expense, rather than punching down.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">facts <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/E131xSFXwW\">https:\/\/t.co\/E131xSFXwW<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Couplet Coffee (@CoupletCoffee) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CoupletCoffee\/status\/1526734985289314304?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 18, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Importantly, Couplet encourages people to embrace the things and people they love openly. The brand has thrown the concept of a \u2018guilty pleasure\u2019 out the window. Skolnick\u2019s own love for poetry (something maybe judgmentally considered strange for someone with a tech background) is present right in the name: there\u2019s a two-line poem\u2013a couplet\u2013on every bag of coffee.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Skolnick described her approach to Couplet\u2019s marketing strategy as \u201creally intuitive.\u201d For instance, she was bored of the traditional minimalist ad photography that puts products on a blank background, so she searched for new ways to do it. Couplet\u2019s Instagram shows a different direction: Playful photos showing products out and about, having conversations with one another, including a montage showing a moka pot and a French press <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/Cbv4P8njIUC\/\">getting married on the beach<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inspiration for the brand\u2019s identity didn\u2019t come from other coffee brands. \u201cWe do need to reinvent the wheel,\u201d she said about her thought process behind it. Instead, she looks to streetwear, Gen Z culture, and Couplet\u2019s customers for what they should try next.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Exploration and play dominate the brand. Skolnick reminds me that Couplet is still new, so they\u2019re always trying new things to see how it works. \u201cWe\u2019re just a fun brand, and we say what we want to say playfully and sometimes abrasively,\u201d she says. \u201cThat\u2019s the identity of Couplet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite occasionally being more straightforward than other brands might be\u2014that\u2019s what I took \u2018abrasive\u2019 to mean\u2014Skolnick\u2019s approach is never alienating. Unlike brands that use shock or deliberately create feelings of exclusion from \u2018the club\u2019 to sell a product, Couplet\u2019s strategy seems to be disbanding the club entirely and making a real community.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u2018Making it Cute\u2019 Online And Off<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Couplet\u2019s pop-up Queer Art Show and Poetry Night, which occurs every other month, is one example of how the company stands by Skolnick\u2019s founding principle that good coffee shouldn\u2019t be exclusionary. Couplet has created space for people to come together and celebrate things they\u2019re passionate about, like art, poetry, and coffee. The events are always packed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/freshcup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/IMG_3173-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-30972\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freshcup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/IMG_3173-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/freshcup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/IMG_3173-500x333.jpg 500w, https:\/\/freshcup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/IMG_3173-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/freshcup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/IMG_3173-1080x720.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/freshcup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/IMG_3173-610x407.jpg 610w, https:\/\/freshcup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/IMG_3173.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Other coffee products Couplet sells, like the Mooka Pot and the Lover\u2019s French Press, have \u2018cute\u2019 as their whole justification for existence. The ethos is different from years of sleek stainless steel design\u2014like everything else Couplet does, these are meant to put the \u201cfun\u201d back into \u201cfunctional.\u201d The Mooka Pot, a cow print covered twist on the classic Moka pot, was one of the early products that Skolnick showed to Couplet\u2019s social media followers first, letting them decide if Couplet would carry the product. The thunderous reaction\u2014all heart emojis and \u201cI need it!\u201d\u2014convinced her to put in an order. The Lover\u2019s French Press, which is bright red with a heart-shaped window to see inside, was the next cute product Skolnick brought in.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After a long period of minimalism and \u2018cool\u2019 in coffee, Couplet is at the forefront of a new vanguard of coffee brands embracing maximalism and feeling cute. \u201cI would love if brands were doing more hype-driven fun cool stuff because it\u2019s felt stale for a while,\u201d Skolnick mused. Couplet\u2019s social media-driven rise in the coffee industry is proof that cool is out and cute is in.
