The country\u2019s \u201clong rains\u201d season was unusually dry; <a href=\"https:\/\/worldteanews.com\/tea-industry-news-and-features\/kenyan-tea-exports-suffer-because-of-drought-and-sanctions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>World Tea News<\/em><\/a> points to Tropical Cyclone Idai, saying that the storm redirected moisture away from the region. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-07-29\/kenya-s-shilling-near-four-year-low-as-flower-tea-exports-slip\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">According to <em>Bloomberg<\/em><\/a>, production during the first five months of 2019 was 170.18 million kilograms, markedly lower than 2018\u2019s 187.69 million kilograms. Jointly, the average auction price this year is $2.25 per kilogram, a nearly 20% drop compared to last year\u2019s $2.80. Ultimately, the lower tea exports, paired with the drop-in tourism and the flower industry, have resulted in Kenya\u2019s economy dropping to 104.07 shillings per dollar and its fifth straight month in decline.
